Tips for Decoupage on Furniture

Tips for Decoupage on Furniture

You can create some stunning and unique pieces of furniture by using decoupage. On my website you will find a huge range of images available in both A3 and A1 sizes which are perfect for furniture.

What we stock

Here you will find MINT by Michelle decoupage papers which are a quality paper with clear images. There are also now a range of images available in reverse. Great for if you are using them on a cupboard with 2 doors as mirror images or if the reverse paper just suits your piece better.

Posh Chalk Decoupage Papers are a quality rice paper with fibres running through to create a more textured look. Posh Chalk have collaborated with Jonathan Mark Mendes to bring you The House of Mendes range of luxury papers.

You can find all of these decoupage papers for furniture on my website.

Decoupage Mediums

Decoupage papers can be glued down with a range of mediums. Bunty's Decoupage Glue and Finish is a great all purpose option at a really good price.

Posh Chalk Infusor, Wise Owl Varnish and Wise Owl One Hour Enamel in clear are also good options.

My Top Tip is to use the same medium to glue down your paper as you do to finish it. This helps to stop the glue reactivating and causing bubble in your paper when you come to top coat.

Paint and Trimming

Once you've chosen your paper you will need to choose your paint. Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis Paint is a great paint for blending and comes in a fabulous range of rich colours. If you are confident you can use paint to blend in to your image and carry it on around your piece.

If you need to disguise edges and create texture then add some Saltwash to your paint. Using Saltwash and applying with a pallet knife can create an oil painted look with goes well with some of the art work images.

If you are not confident blending, fear not! There are other ways you can disguise the edges if your image doesn't fully fit your piece.

WoodUbend Mouldings can be used to create a frame around your image. You can use individual designs or or a trim to edge the image.

You could even just paint on a frame using metallics. Again add some Saltwash to create a hammered metal effect. This works well on some of the old art work images such as the Young Girl Reading.

Stencils

Stencils can be used to disguise edging by introducing a design and bringing it to overlap the paper. Use contrasting colours or metallics for a striking effect. Or keep it low key by using similar colours.

Raised stencils are another option. Again you can mix Saltwash with your paint or use a ready mixed paste such as Posh Chalk Smooth Paste

I hope this blog post gives you some inspiration!

Happy Decoupaging!!
